Hot weather demands a refreshing drink. A tiresome heat and sweat can cause some trouble in our minds. We may lose interest to keep the work going. A quick sip from 7 Up can refresh your day and it just feels good to be you.

Now let us explore who makes 7up? How did they manage to win people all over the world? We will check out some of their drinks and what people think about them. Besides, we will try to clear out some of the common confusion about their various drinks too.

About 7 Up

In the United States, this beverage is known as 7 Up but outside the United States, it is 7up. It is the most famous lemon-lime flavored non-caffeinated drink. Nowadays 7 Up offers different variants of this drink according to the need of consumers.

7 Up was created by Charles Leiper Grigg. He started the Howdy Corporation in 1920. It was a St. Louise based company. 7 Up started its journey with the name “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda” and launched in 1929, two weeks before the Wall Street Crash.

Today we found 7 up without any drugs or caffeine. Unfortunately, this was not the case in the early days. When the 7 Up started as “Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda”  they used lithium citrate which is a mood-stabilizing drug. They used this until 1948.
They shortened the name to “7 Up Lithiated Lemon Soda” and later in 1936, the name was further shortened to only 7 Up. Nowadays Keurig Dr. Pepper has the rights to the 7 Up in the U.S and 7 Up international has the rights to the rest of the world.

Change of hands

Initially, 7 Up was a privately owned company by its founding members. Later in 1978, they sold it to Phillip Moris USA, an American Tobacco Division of the American Tobacco Corporation Atlanta group. It was sold in 1986 again in two groups, PepsiCo and Hicks and Haas.

PepsiCo handles the international distribution of the product whereas Hicks and Haas maintained the operation in the U.S. 7 Up merged with Dr. Pepper in 1928. After many exchanges of hands in 2018, they formed Keurig Dr. Papper.

Keurig Dr. Pepper Inc.

Keurig Dr. Pepper Inc. was formerly known as the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (1981–2014) and Keurig Green Mountain (2014–2018). They are a publicly-traded American beverage and beverage maker conglomerate. Its headquarter is situated in Burlington, Massachusetts.

Near a Vermont ski resort, an entrepreneur named Robert P. Stiller started a Green Mounted coffee roaster. On the other hand, three engineering entrepreneurs from Massachusetts approached GMCR about a single coffee cup brewing system in 1993.  Both companies got merged in 2008.

Pepsico Inc.

They are an American multinational food, snack, and beverage corporation. They are responsible for the international distribution for 7 Up and more. PepsiCo has its headquarters in Harrison, New York.

The PepsiCo we know today started in 1965 with the merger of two companies Pepsi-Cola Company and Frito-Lay, Inc. PepsiCo currently owns 23 brands and in January 2021 they made $1 Billion in sales.
