Blizzard Entertainment is a top tier developer and publisher of games, and has an amazing pedigree including some of the industry’s most critically acclaimed games, including World of Warcraft®, Hearthstone®, StarCraft®, Overwatch® and Diablo®. But which one game makes Blizzard the most money?
Blizzard all time Game Sales Chart!
Number 1 top selling Blizzard game!
The best selling game from the Blizzard stable to date is the mighty Overwatch® with a colossal 50 million copies sold over 3 years according to a Bloomberg report that was published in April 2022. The game made over $1billion in its first year of release!
The game tapped into a fairly new, but immensely popular trend among gamers and the public. That being esports, which not only engaged online multiplayer contests, but also spectating other players (a la twitch style).
It’s basically like being a professional sports fan (eg American football), only instead of watching actual people play American football, you’re watching people play digital characters online.
Overwatch 2 has been available since October 8th, 2023 and in the newer version of the game, the company is using the free to play model like fortnight. This move clearly paid off for them.
With Blizzard quoting “The October launch of Overwatch 2 with a free-to-play model delivered the highest quarterly figures for player numbers and hours played in Overwatch history,” showing the move to free to play has been a net positive for overall engagement for the franchise.
